The ancient Greeks more or less defined and created the genre we all know as a “tragedy”. I sometime think that they appreciated the tragic more than any of the other aspects of life. Appreciate may not be apt. I think it’s more that they so want to understand like the rest of us. The way the ancient Greeks approach this aspect of life is more direct than most people nowadays can handle. To place it front and center, and across your entire field of vision. You’re not allowed to look away. You can only watch in horror and disbelief with the distinct suspicion that all will not end well for any of the players. I say players, because in a tragedy no one is the protagonist. Everyone is wholly responsible for their actions, even if they don’t fully appreciate the consequences of their actions. You, the person witnessing this, are then the only person who fully grasps and appreciates the true extent of the tragedy unfolding.
