Pedestrian ideas on the macroeconomics

“To build a prosperous future,” he said, “we must trust people with their own money and empower them to grow our economy. ” [From NPR].
When I read that I thought my eyes were betraying me.  Haven’t we been doing that during the past 3 years.  As a measurement of how well our economy has grown, my opinion is that it’s not doing so hot trusting people with their own money.  Empowering people to grow the economy is what got a lot of people out there in deep[er] shit.  They borrowed from tomorrow to pay for today.  Ooh!  That’s a catchy jingle.  But it’s not exactly true either.  It would be more truthful to say that tomorrow’s loan went towards yesterday.  Today?  Well the one’s in deep shit are just hoping for a deus ex machina type event to occur.
