Getting soused for a good cause

I took some friends out last night for dinner downtown. It’s been awhile since I’d actually gotten good and properly inebriated. I basically stopped drinking when class started in January. About midway through the semester, I swore I was going to get a good drunk on when I finished. I took care of that last night.

The friends were a coworker and his wife. His wife was in town from out of state for their son’s graduation. She’d been taking care of her ill parents in Pennsylvania. She’d been stressed out lately about the health of her parents, and I thought it would do her good to unwind. I decided to help her do just that. While I was at it, I was going to unwind myself. In grand fashion.

I remembered a restaurant downtown called Daddy Jack’s that we’d been to awhile back, so we headed there. I hadn’t figured that most of downtown would be be pretty busy. Golfing events and the arts district really lit up downtown. I mean that in both the literal and figurative sense. People were everywhere. The waiting list at the restaurant was 40 minutes long. We took seats at the bar and that’s when the sousing began. My coworker had his usual plain Coors or as I call it, colored water. Domestic beer has never gotten me all that excited. I have to wonder how anyone ever gets even a bit tipsy drinking the stuff. The alcoholic content is almost nil. His wife left it up to me to decide what she drank, so I ordered a bottle of champaigne and split it between the two of us. After being seated, and during the course of the meal we polished off the champaigne and ordered a bottle of shiraz. So between the two of us (my coworker never touched the champaigne or the shiraz) we had two bottles. All in all it was a good night and the morning after wasn’t bad either.
